Numerous researchers in MSU’s College of Education have endorsed a set of high school graduation standards approved last week that proponents said will better prepare students for college.

The Common Core State Standards were approved June 2 by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, as well as teachers and administrators nationwide.

Among other changes, the standards would put increased emphasis on writing and align Michigan’s education standards with those in other states on a national level. continue reading…

China will receive 100,000 US students in the next four years as part of the education cooperation programme, a Chinese official has said.

The two countries have agreed on an exchange programme under which American students will come to study Chinese language or do research, said Zhang Xiuqin, director of Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education.

The agreement was signed during the second round of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue, which concluded on Tuesday in Beijing, Xinhua reported.

Principals of some US primary and secondary schools and Chinese language teachers in the US will be invited to China as part of the project.

American college students will also be invited to participate in summer language camps in China. And, under the agreement, 10,000 Chinese post-graduates will go to the US to pursue PhD. continue reading…

I suspect by the growing numbers of people who read BioJobBlog, that some of you may be beginning to wonder who I am. While nobody has taken me to task about my credentials or musings to date, I figured it may be worthwhile to share my “story” with those BioJobBlog readers who may be at a crossroads in their careers. I credit my graduate school experiences and PhD degree for the tenacity, perseverance and the ability to reinvent myself during an eclectic, and oft times, circuitous career path.

Taking the Path Less Traveled

I had always liked science but by age 10, I had already decided that I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after seeing the film Ben Hur at age 11—during which two of the main characters who have leprosy are miraculously cured—I fantasized what it might be like to be able to discover cures for infectious diseases. As corny as it may sound, the movie convinced me that my true calling in life wasn’t veterinary medicine but microbiology. Nevertheless, I attended Cornell University as a pre-veterinary medicine undergraduate with a dual major in animal science and microbiology. During my senior year at Cornell, Dr. Brooks Naylor, my food microbiology professor at the time, invited me to do a senior research project in his laboratory. After several weeks in the laboratory I was hooked and knew that graduate school and not veterinary school was in my future.

The application will be invited from the first five rank holders in Agricultural Sciences, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences, Earth System Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Taxonomy (Botany & Zoology) and History of S&T.
Each selected student will be eligible for a monthly fellowship of Rs. 9,000/- for the 1st and 2nd year and Rs. 10,000/- for the 3rd year. An annual contingent grant of Rs. 15,000/- and 10% H.R.A also will be granted to the research fellows.

Researchers will be selected on the basis of research aptitude test conducted by KSCSTE (date will be announced later) followed by personal interview. Candidates must register for Ph. D in the discipline in which they are selected for fellowship.

They must register for Ph. D Programme in any one of the Universities in Kerala, latest by the next admission time in the respective Universities in any case not later than one year after the award. They may carry out the research work either in University Departments, National Institutes or any recognized R & D Centres, which will be called the ‘Institution’. If they are already undertaking the research work, the Head of the Institution will intimate the fact to KSCSTE where they are undertaking research work.
